Every year the idea of celebrating solstice rather than Christmas sounds more and more appealing. I mean, take last year for example, where I celebrated Christmas with my dad's side of the family. In the room were no Christians, only two had been baptised and my sister were the only confirmed (but she's regretted that ever since). *All* of us were communists or something to that extend (I, myself, is a Marxist). My grandmom is part Jewish. Our Christmas tree was a wish-wash of Christian, heathen and Jewish ornaments and we sang Christian and "normal" Christmas songs. Why, exactly, do we celebrate Christmas? Because of the rest of the world does, which is possibly the worst reason ever. We spend tons and tons on money and energy on buying things for each other, things we don't even want but have just put down on a list because someone asked for a wish-list in the last minute.

In my family only my mom's mother believed in Jesus and she's dead now. Out of 30 people who we celebrate this holiday with *NONE* believe in it. We are more or less all too scientific and logical to be able to believe in such things as God and the Bible, which is absolutely fine by me. The only thing that bothers me is why we can't celebrate on the 21st instead of the 24th, because that would make so much more sense to me.

ETA: But this makes me happy :)

But...but...but...how can you not *like* Christmas? I mean, I get the whole athiest/agnostic/pagan*/partly jewish thing, but Christmas is still fun. It's still cozy and lovely and maybe a bit stressed, but still!

Also *hugs*. Don't get too stressed out, okay?

*Okay, so I realize probably no one in your family is pagan, but since you mentioned solstice, I'd throw it in there

It's not that I don't like Christmas. Sure, it's nice to open up your calendar everyday, burn the Christmas candle, possibly watching some of the TV shows and eating cookies, but Christmas in the Christian sense means absolutely nothing to me or any of the people I celebrate it with. Every year I feel like I'm mocking the people who actually *do* believe in it. That's why moving our celebration (of...what?) to the 21st would make more sense, because then we'd actually have something to celebrate in the first place!

I'll try ;) *hugs*

It was actually Rasmus mentioning that he went to a solstice party on Wednesday that brought this on. It sounded way more interesting that this Christmas thing we've got going on

To me, Christmas has always been (and will always be, in spite of the fact I actually do call myself a Christian) a secular holiday. I sing the songs because they're beautiful and because words have power when they've been said and sung for so long, but I'm not thinking about God or Jesus or salvation or anything like that. In fact, I almost never do (as for *when* I do so, let me just put it this way - once in a blue moon). I like Christmas. I like it even more in Danish, where the words have nothing to do with Christianity, but that's just the way it goes. I like Christmas because it's not about *me*. It's about the eternal *you*. How to make *you* happy, not *me*. You make peace with people and that's important, because we hardly ever get the chance to be good in spite of ourselves (sometimes it really *feels* like we can only be good *in spite* of ourselves). That said, there's no reason it couldn't be on the 21st. I celebrate on the 24th (because I'm Danish). Americans, for example, celebrate on the 25th (which, by the way, is my birthday. Happy birthday to me!). The time really isn't that important, only in that you've worked your way towards it.

Also, I love you. You just made me type this while sitting with a splitting head ache. See? We *can* be good to those we love in spite of ourselves. ;)

What, exactly, is stopping you from either doing the present thing some other day or just strip the Cristian Christmassy things?

Seriously, "we" have Sinterklaas (no religious significance whatsoever, despite the identity of the real Saint Nicholas) for the present thing and Christmas is just that time of year when you have nice dinners with friends and family and get to make your house look pretty with what would otherwise be cheap junk (of heathen origin). ;]
